Why Join An Inclusive Book Study?
Why would anyone want to take the time to participate in a book study? There are a lot of reasons for participating in a collaborative, thoughtfully creative, and intense book study.
So how do we know all this? We partnered with another agency and offered a book study using "Design and Deliver" this past fall. Then we collaborated with over 15 more agencies. Within no time at all we had almost 200 people registered for a book study. Several even did it districtwide with extension activities and support between sessions.
One of the great parts about being in the education field is having someone willing to mentor and lend a hand. We were fortunate enough to have a Universal Design for Learning (UDL) Coordinator from Indiana jump on board with us. She was very supportive through compliments, ideas and coaching. She even went as far as recruiting teachers from her district to join in the fun. Their district brought decades of experience and knowledge to the study.
What really made this book study extra special was how the author joined in on the sessions. Dr. Loui Lord Nelson made the book study extra special. Dr. Nelson added such depth to the discussion through her mind blowing examples and analogies.
The following are a few specific items that came out of the book study.
1. Collaboration from across the district, region, state and country.
2. Learning from very experienced people that are participating.
3. Asking tough questions, and getting answers that help in the classroom.
4. Strategies come alive after hearing how others are doing them.
5. The excitement created and amplified by everyone's ideas.
6. Social Networking across different platforms.
The following are a few quotes from participants:
Thank you...a great book study! I plan on developing professional development based on the UDL framework.Thank you, everyone, for such a great experience! Lots of great information to apply to the classroom.
What made our book study inclusive? First, anyone can sign up. It's offered at different times and then if you miss a session you can read up on it through the archive. Flexibility was built in from the beginning.
It is always a sensational experience when everyone joins together to meet specific goals for the purpose of ultimately improving instruction which will benefit all our children. It truly takes a team to pull something this spectacular together.
